A heart project with style and understanding

"Sauerland, mein Herz schlägt für das Sauerland!!" 40 years ago, the Iserlohn band Zoff made a declaration of love to their homeland with the title "Sauerland", even if it was partly ironic.

Just as much love to the region has gone into the “Sauerland Lodge” holiday home ensemble.

The Sauerland and the Rothaargebirge mountains are known as the “Land of 1,000 mountains”. Forests, lakes, waterfalls, nature parks and altitudes of over 800 metres – that’s what makes the region so attractive. And at any time of the year. Whether winter sports, hiking, water skiing or cycling and mountain biking – the list of sporting opportunities here is long for families and active holidaymakers alike.

Fabian Alberti recognised that this region also offers a wide range of other opportunities and implemented a very special project here. The architect and project manager from Havixbeck has close ties to the Sauerland, as his mother comes from the region. When the opportunity arose in 2020 to purchase a plot of land in Niedersfeld, a suburb of Winterberg, he jumped at it. The property was advertised. An undeveloped hillside where six houses were planned. “Building on a slope is not easy,” explains Alberti. “That’s why the plot had been lying fallow for several years.” However, the location was ideal for the architect, as the climatic health resort of Niedersfeld with its proximity to Lake Hillebachsee and the Hochheide is considered a real insider tip. The idea for the “Sauerland Lodge” was born.

Sustainable holiday home

“I had wanted a refuge for the family in the Sauerland region for years. The ideal concept back then was a wooden hut in front of a wooded area,” says Alberti. Instead of the wooden hut, there are now six designer holiday homes that are fully integrated into the landscape. “Sauerland is a wood-related region. A wooden façade for the houses was the obvious choice,” explains the architect. The six houses were built with pre-greyed silver fir in modular construction. Black window profiles were used to contrast with the wood. The house modules were delivered within six weeks and assembled in two-week cycles.

The furnishing style is of a high quality and shows great attention to detail. “We chose the furnishings in such a way that we can identify with them. We have a similar interior in our home,” says Alberti. The guests feel the personal touch, which is also reflected in the topic of “sustainability”. A solid wood ceiling for the ideal living climate, heat pump, ventilation system and the QuinLine® lift and slide door with corresponding thermal insulation – these are just some of the components that give the holiday accommodation the “Energiehaus 40” rating.

Optimal use of lift and slide doors

A QuinLine® lift and slide door opens each of the houses to the south-facing slope. “The view really is framed by the lift and slide door. You could say that you don’t need a television any more”, says Alberti happily. With a length of approx. 5 metres and approx. 2.50 metres per element, the boundaries between indoors and outdoors blur. When closed or open, they always seem to be open and reflect the grandeur of the location.

“Lift and slide doors are always an issue for high-quality residential construction,” reports the architect and project manager from his experience. The PVC-U lift and slide door is not only a favourable option as a result of the development of construction prices, but above all by the immense range of decorative foils and surfaces. For the 120 to 140 square metre holiday homes, the space-saving aspect is also not to be scoffed at. For example, the houses can also be equipped with conference tables for company training or workshops – without blocking the path for those wanting some fresh air.

Project and region in harmony

In the “Sauerland Lodge” design and nature create an attractive and harmonious environment for you to relax. Plenty of guests have been able to experience this since May 2022. Weddings are celebrated here, as are active holidays on mountain bikes and family holidays at the bathing lake. Even those from the mountain-blessed region of Allgäu like to go biking in Sauerland, as the region is known for its arenas and even European championships in the sport.

Even though winter sports are becoming less important due to the changing climate, the “Sauerland Lodge” has already welcomed guests from Abu Dhabi. “The parents of a four-year-old wanted to show their son the snow. The day before they arrived, there was 50 centimetres of fresh snow,” says a delighted Fabian Alberti, whose passion for design and architecture is as palpable as his attachment to the Sauerland region.
